Will a Hail Damage Claim Raise My Insurance Rates? Texas Drivers Guide

Comprehensive vs collision claims, why hail claims usually don't raise rates in Texas, and when filing makes more sense than paying out of pocket.

It's the #2 question after a DFW hail storm: "If I file this claim, will my premium go up?" For Texas drivers, the answer is almost always no — but the details matter.

Comprehensive vs Collision

Hail damage falls under your comprehensive coverage, not collision. That distinction matters because collision claims (where you hit something) are considered at-fault events. Comprehensive claims (hail, theft, falling objects, animal strikes) are no-fault. Insurers price comprehensive risk regionally, not per individual.

Texas Law and Surcharges

Texas Insurance Code Section 552 generally prohibits insurers from raising your premium based on a single comprehensive claim. The vast majority of carriers — State Farm, USAA, Geico, Allstate, Progressive, Farmers — confirm in writing that a single hail claim will not surcharge your policy.

When There Are Exceptions

Two situations can move the needle. First, if you file multiple comprehensive claims in a short window (e.g., three hail events in 18 months), some carriers may flag your policy for non-renewal at the end of the term. Second, regional rate increases following a major DFW hail season affect every driver in the area — claim or no claim. That's not a surcharge against you specifically.

Deductible Considerations

Most comprehensive deductibles run $500–$1,500. If your damage estimate is below or barely above your deductible, paying out of pocket may make sense — but only if you'd actually pay for the repair otherwise. For hail damage above $2,500, filing almost always wins. We also run a deductible-assistance program that brings most DFW customers to $0 out of pocket regardless.

When to File vs Pay Out of Pocket

File if: damage is more than 2x your deductible, your vehicle is newer or leased, or you plan to sell/trade within 3 years. Pay out of pocket if: damage is below your deductible, the car is older with minor damage you can live with, or you've already filed multiple comprehensive claims recently.

Bottom Line

For nearly every DFW driver hit by a single hail storm: file. Your rates almost certainly will not increase, your deductible likely won't apply, and your vehicle's resale value will thank you. Text photos to (945) 299-0435 and we'll walk you through it.
